Mental health Gap Action Program (mhGAP) Trainer

CONTEXT

Médecins du Monde (MdM) is an international humanitarian organization that provides medical care to the most vulnerable populations affected by war, natural disasters, disease, famine, poverty and exclusion, those who do not have access to health care and those who the world is gradually forgetting. 

MdM has been working in Lebanon for more than 30 years in the sector of Health (sub-sector Primary Health Care and Mental Health), while ensuring cross cutting subjects in Gender Based Violence and Sexual and Reproductive Health.  Since 2012, in cooperation with civil society organizations as well as national and local authorities, MDM’s intervention aimed at increasing access to quality primary healthcare and strengthening the national primary healthcare system. Moreover, MDM has been actively engaged in providing access to Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) services and working at integrating mental health in the primary healthcare system.

The Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) is a WHO program launched in 2010 and aimed at scaling up services for mental, neurological, and substance use disorders across countries, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The mhGAP-IG is an intervention guide for clinical decision-making for the priority mental health conditions in Primary Health Care settings.

OBJECTIVES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Training objectives

The general objective of the training on mhGAP is to provide PHCC staff trainees (GPs, nurses, midwives, social workers) with enhanced knowledge, skills and attitude to assess and manage the cases of persons with mild or moderate mental health disorders and to refer cases of persons with severe mental health disorders.

Training content

The training should last 4 days, provided in Arabic (presentation in English), based on the mhGAP intervention Guide for mental, neurological and substance use (MNS) disorders in non-specialized health settings. The trainer should cover at least the following topics:

  • General principles of care
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Trauma-related disorders
  • Psychosis 
  • Suicide/Self -Harm
  • Disorders related to the use of alcohol and drugs
  • Developmental Disorders

The training should take in consideration the piloted protocols designed by the National Mental Health Program for the screening, assessment and management of depression, anxiety and PTSD in primary health care centers.

Target population                                            

  • General practitioners, Nurses, Social workers, Psychologists and other relevant PHCC staff working in the PHCCs supported by MdM and their partners.
  • MdM and partners’ team members involved in the integration of MH in Primary Health Care projects.  

SCHEDULE

Location, dates and duration

Location: The training will take place in Beirut Lebanon, in person (MdM will provide the venue).

Dates: May 2024/June 2024.

Duration of the training: 4 days

DELIVERABLES

  • Training curricula and material
  • A pre and post-tests need to be conducted and submitted.
  • Final report must be submitted to MdM and should include the following sections:

1. Introduction: Training overview, learning objectives, trainer and participant details

2. Presentation of training outcomes: Pre-post-test results (graph), analysis of evaluation, any additional feedback from participants and trainer.

3. Annexes (Agenda, signed and scanned attendance sheet, data-entry attendance list, pre-posttest template, evaluation template)

Requested profile

· Mandatory

  • Minimum Diploma: doctor in psychiatry
  • ToT on mhGAP certification
  • Experience providing training to health staff
  • Experience in the humanitarian field
  • Arabic and English language
  • Familiar with the National Mental Health Program pilot project for the Integration of Mental Health in Primary Health Care.

  • Financial offer, incorporating the budget allocation (Price including taxes & MOF tax 7.5% consultancy tax, the validity of the offer, terms of payment, payment modality etc).
  • A copy of legal documents (MOF registration, VAT registration, Commercial Circular …)
  • Any and all relevant information or deemed of value to MdM.
