Overview of FRH

Ruwad al Houkouk is a non-profit and apolitical NGO that aims at enhancing the human rights of vulnerable marginalized groups in Lebanon. The association’s target population is the refugees, stateless persons and migrant workers. Its main activities include legal services, produces policy papers and conduct advocacy activities.

Description:

Ruwad Al Houkouk is looking to hire a lawyer with brilliant research and analytical skills. The Lawyer is expected to display sound judgment and decision-making with outstanding problem-solving and communication skills.

To ensure success, lawyer should be determined, professional and well informed with a keen interest in upholding the law while protecting a client’s rights. Top candidate will display natural leadership qualities with fantastic interpersonal, written and public speaking skills.  

The Project

The birth of children of migrants’ workers in illegal situation born in Lebanon cannot be registered and hence become stateless. The illegal residency of parents marginalizes and denies them adequate work conditions. They have to regularize their legal status in order to register their marriage and the birth of their children with the administration and/or judicially and thereafter with their respective embassies. Children without a nationality or legal status means denial of access to other basic and fundamental rights such as education and health care. Further, this denies them childhood enjoyment and proper development.

Project aim

The project is designed based on post identification to the particular target group of foreign migrant workers and an assessment of the needs to reach fundamental rights.

Working toward preventing and reducing protection risks faced by migrant workers, the project will bring the following concrete changes on their situation:

    1. Regularized marital and kinship status of parents
    2. Regularized residency permits of parents allowing them to obtain legal status and obtain adequate work conditions
    3. Parents’ marriage and children’s birth are registered with administration and embassies

Duties of the lawyer

The day-to-day duties of a lawyer include:

  • Providing legal advice and guidance
  • Writing agreements
  • Meeting beneficiaries (individuals or institutions, other NGOs, etc…)
  • Collating evidence and researching case studies
  • Keeping up to date with changes in the law
  • Preparing case factual and legal analysis
  • Conducting legal research
  • Setting planning and priorities
  • Delegating tasks to the team
  • Managing the project from the start to the end
  • Representing clients before the different instances
  • Attending court hearings

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Master in Law or LLM (is essential)
  • Admitted attorney of at least two years standing with 3-5 years of experience in the field
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and negotiation skills
  • Excellent business judgment and high level of professionalism
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills and can manage large volumes of data and documents
  • Excellent knowledge of substantive laws and procedures
  • Good analytical and logical reasoning skills
  • Experience in drafting, negotiating and reviewing legal documents
  • Analytical thinker with strong conceptual and research skills
  • Natural leader who displays sound judgment and attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and public speaking skills
  • Master technology and communication skills such as word processing, presentation, time management, billing, and practice-related software applications, emails, voice, voice messaging systems, video conferencing, and related technology, and document management software
  • Ability to develop multi-tasking skills and to juggle competing priorities, and meet tight deadlines
  • Empathy and compassion and supportive to clients
  • Honesty and trustworthiness and follow strict ethical guidelines and client confidentiality rules

Working environment 

The work is conducted mainly from the office (Badaro), but travel will be required for meetings, trainings, workshops, and attending business in courts.

Hours

Working hours range from 37 to 48 hours a week. Occasinal weekend and late-night hours may be required when preparing for a trial.

Project period: 6 months

Remuneration

A global package ranging between US$6000 to US$8000
