The presentation will offer an analysis of Arab engagement with UN human rights mechanisms from 2005-2012. It summarizes issues raised by states and NGOs, and assesses the recommendations of the human rights treaty bodies, and the Human Rights Council’s UniversalPeriodic Review, resulting Arab states’ acceptance and rejection of those recommendations. The research report was published by IFI in July 2013.
Fateh Azzam, is a Senior Public Policy Fellow at the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, and newly-appointed Director of the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship. Mr. Azzam holds an LLM in International Human Rights Law from the University of Essex. He was Regional Representative for the Middle East of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2006 until 2012, and Director of the Forced Migration and Refugee Studies Program at the American University in Cairo (2003-2006). He led the process of establishing the Arab Human Rights Fund, was Chairman of its Board of Directors until 2014, and has served on the boards of several Palestinian, Arab and international human rights organizations.
