National Consultations And World Survey For A Better World

Beirut,9 May 2013(United Nations Information Centre) — Less than 1000 days separate us from the target date for achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which world leaders committed themselves in 2000 to implement by the end of 2015. Despite the significant progress that has been achieved, there is still an urgent need to mobilize efforts to achieve the best results. The United Nations has begun defining the post-2015 development agenda. More than 100 countries, including Lebanon, are holdingnational consultationswith various stakeholders such as civil society, NGOs,the private sector, educational institutions, youth and others to set the global development priorities beyond the year 2015. Every country will present its report to the world organization revealing its priorities for the next period and the challenges it will meet.
For a broader participation in the national consultations, the United Nations in Lebanon launched an E-Forum entitled “What Lebanon Do You Want?” http://www.meetup.com/Lebanon-National-Post-2015-Consultations/and called on all social and concerned groups in Lebanon to participate in this forum, stating their vision of the nation they want.
The United Nations also launched a global survey for a better world entitled “MY World”. The Organization called on citizens of all ages, genders and backgrounds across the world to participate in this survey by replying to six of 16 possible issues they think would make the most difference to their lives.
The issues cover the MDGs which involve the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education, promoting gender equality and empowering women, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability, global partnership for development in addition to security issues, governance and transparency.
The “MY World” global survey is available in the six UN official languages on the following URL: www.myworld2015.org. It could also be accessed through social media and mobile phone technologies via SMS and Interactive Voice Response. The Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda will define the priorities for beyond 2015 period. Results of the national consultations will also be submitted to the Secretary General’s High-level Panel to include them in the final report.
