Promoting an Enhanced and Sustainable Protective Environment for Children in Lebanon

Training on Narrative Report Writing

  • CONTEXT AND RATIONAL FOR ACTIVITY

Tdh opened its delegation in Lebanon in 1977. After a few years out of the country in the years 2000, Tdh reopened an office in 2006 in South Lebanon to respond to the humanitarian needs generated by the 33-day war between Israel and Lebanon, and soon became the main Child Protection agency in the South. Tdh interventions over the past years included CP projects in emergency context and long-term initiatives for the most marginalized, essentially from Palestinian and Dom communities. Tdh core expertise in Lebanon include Psychosocial Support (PSS) activities, case management, community based interventions around CP and GBC, relief items distribution, research as well as capacity building of local government and civil society actors through its Training and Development Department. Tdh started activities for children affected by the Syrian conflict in South Lebanon in 2012 with recreational activities, relief items distribution, case management (CM), SGBV, PSS and trainings of local actors with an objective to strengthen local governance and the capacities of national players.

With the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation-SDC, Terre des Hommes Lausanne- Tdh is implementing activities to Promote and enhance a sustainable, protective environment for children in Lebanon, with the main objective to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable children, using an approach based on three principal components: response, prevention and capacity building.

This approach aims to work on vulnerability causes, prevention of them and tailored response, to guarantee a long-term impact on beneficiaries, especially on most vulnerable children and youth. The intervention will ensure children benefit from a holistic package of services, including case management, focused and community based psychosocial support (PSS), ensuring youths are involved in youth groups and life skills and that their parents are engaged in positive parenting activities, through Tdh direct intervention or partners service provision. The goal is to enhance child participation and youth empowerment, as well as to promote social cohesion and inclusion, through the engagement of children and youth in arts, sports and life skills activities. The project will also put a greater focus on the risks linked to gender-based violence with a focus on early marriage, by setting up safe spaces for adolescent girls, offering age and gender adapted services.

Moreover, with the support of UNICEF, Terre Des Hommes Lausanne-Tdh is implementing activities to improved and equitable prevention of and response to violence, abuse, exploitation and neglect, including gender-based violence for children and women.

  • OBJECTIVE/S of the training

To train and provide at least 23 delegated staff members with the expertise and knowledge on the preparation of narrative report writing and reporting on project activities.

  • TRAINING PROTOCOLE

Terre Des Hommes currently has two projects funded by SDC and UNICEF with at least 10 different partners who are required to report on a monthly basis on the implementation of activities taking place. The objective of this training is to equip these partners with the technical capacity and support in order to create and submit successful monthly reports. The essence of a good report is that it compares results attained with results desired and reporting on the results of these activities requires some analysis that go beyond the activity description.

The basic layout of a narrative report should include the following items:

  1. The activity or work area being considered
  2. A time schedule for the period you are reporting on and completed activities;
  3. Targets which have been reached during the period;
  4. Budget and actual expenditures (inputs and costs); only if deemed necessary and depending upon whether the narrative report template includes a section on budget and actual expenditures.
  5. Problems/constraints experienced and management action required.

In addition, there may be details about activities related to the project but not directly under the project management control. The reports should include a mixture of narrative comments and quantitative data. They should make clear what was planned and what was achieved or when targets were not set, what was achieved in the same period the month before.

A good checklist of writing a successful narrative report should include the objectives (refer to all the objectives of the components reported on and on the outputs), Indicators (progress should be reported on the basis of indicators which are described in the project proposal) Targets (for each indicator there should be a target and preferably the targets should all be of the same consistency) Narrative content (the purpose of writing the report is to identify progress towards producing outputs and meeting objectives) Analysis (the purpose of the analysis is to improve and support the implementation of the project, this should include the accuracy of planning and budgeting, resource constraints, coordination issues, management issues internal to the organization if any, adverse external environment.
