Education Assistant - North

ROLE PURPOSE:
As a member of the Education in Emergencies team, the Education Assistant will be responsible for implementing the Education in Emergencies programme interventions for affected communities under the supervision of the Education Officer. The Education Assistant will work towards ensuring the programme is of a high technical quality, monitoring processes are in place, that timely reporting occurs, and that the programme is continually assessed and solutions quickly put in place for a change of context.
SCOPE OF ROLE:
Reports to: Education Officer
Reporting to: No direct reports although this staff will be a focal point between the programme and implementing communities. The Education Assistants are expected to monitor the Educational sites on a regular basis.
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Under the supervision of the Education Officer, the Education Assistant will facilitate the implementation of the Education in Emergencies programme particularly Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) and Homework Support / Retention Support programmes, work closely with parents and communities, ensure smooth exchange between SCI Education team, beneficiaries and communities and provide technical support as needed;
- Contribute for ongoing field assessments and data collection as required;
- With the Education in Emergencies team, contribute to establishing and implementing operational work plans, setting clear targets and activity plans per communities and programme sites;
- Communicate clearly the targets, programme objectives and activity plans clearly to stakeholders, focal points, parents and children;
- Liaise on a daily basis with stakeholders, communities, and Save the Children supervisors and colleagues to guarantee a smooth operation of the programmes;
- Work directly in the field with children, teachers, facilitators, communities, parents, and other stakeholders of the programme locations;
- Provide information and advise the beneficiaries (parents and children) on existing non-formal education opportunities (ECCD and Homework Support programmes), social and protection services, and referring them to relevant services as required;
- Assist in the organisation and implementation of awareness sessions for children, adolescents, parents and communities at large;
- Plan, coordinate, and facilitate the distribution of teaching and learning materials;
- Actively participate in capacity building initiatives when relevant, and assist in the organisation and implementation of trainings and workshops;
- Lead on community outreach activities and conduct focus group discussions and assessments effectively;
- Facilitate, collect and report information regarding the overall situation of the Syrian refugee children and their families in the community, with specific attention paid to the programme targeted children and programme objectives.
- Inform the direct supervisor about any implementation challenges;
- Produce timely reports for internal use on the ongoing activities of the project;
- Ensure that data is accurately collected and reported according to the provided guidelines;
- Ensure a strict adherence to the principles of Child Protection at all times, including respect for confidentiality and a child centred approach and to act in the best interests of the child.
Monitoring and Evaluation
- Participate in regular monitoring and evaluation activities of the Education in Emergencies programme;
- Produce timely reports for internal use on the activities in each site that shows progress and highlights challenges;
- Ensure that data is accurately collected on a daily basis;
- Regularly visit project sites to ensure that the partners, teachers and the community at large are appropriately supported and that qualitative and quantitative programme objectives are achieved;
Adherence to Save the Children policies and procedures
- Comply with Save the Children policies and practice with respect to child protection, Code of Conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE AND ATTRIBUTES
- At least one year experience in Education, preferably in an (I) NGO environment or educational setting. Prior teaching experience is an asset;
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Education, Development / Humanitarian Studies, or Social Science;
- Understanding of national development issues, in particular in relation to children and education, and government institutions, particularly public schools;
- Ability to analyse information, evaluate options and to plan strategically;
- Strength in interpersonal, communication and presentation skills;
- Fluency in written and spoken Arabic, good written and spoken English. French is an asset;
- Flexibility and willingness to change work practices and hours and capability to work in insecure volatile environment;
- Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles including rights-based approaches;
- Familiarity with North and Akkar regions is an asset.
Note that this post is based in Kwaykhat (Akkar), with frequent field visits to Education sites all over North (T5 and Akkar).
