Responsibility

The hospice and palliative care medical coordinator will be involved in multiple aspects of SANAD’s growing projects and clinical service. In this role, the coordinator will ensure a cohesive, team-based approach in the projects pursued, guiding the medical, nursing, mental health and quality, research and development (QRD) team and facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and communication.

Functions

Under the supervision of the Medical Director and the Executive Director, in coordination with the Nursing Director, and in accordance with the Executive Team Practice Policy” and “Medical protocol”, the physician is expected to carry out the following tasks:

Clinical Tasks

  • Approves patient admissions and supervises the medical admission evaluation to determine goals of care, care plan, and monitoring of plan implementation upon need identified by nursing team
  • Coordinates care plan with the primary physician of patient and conducts virtual meetings upon need to facilitate patient care
  • Performs home visits (at least once a week)
  • Provides medical advice and prescriptions for SANAD hospice nurses upon need
  • Addresses any clinical concerns by nursing, mental health or medical team members as appropriate and in coordination with the medical director
  • Promotes the use of clinical tools adopted by SANAD for clinical team, and addresses any barriers or challenges for their use
  • Collaborates with the QRD unit to identify alternative clinical tools based on the need 
  • Evaluates the effects of the care given and regularly reevaluates the patient’s nursing needs
  • Conducts regular and periodic meetings with the interdisciplinary team (IDT), to ensure implementation of the internal updated medical and nursing policies
  • Ensures a weekly IDT meeting to discuss patients’ update, progress, and challenges faced
  • Be available for the families to respond to and provide answers should they need it throughout the care period
  • Conducts bimonthly meetings with the Medical Director to ensure regular discussion over progress, challenges faced, alternative solutions and all other technical matters. 

 

 

Non-clinical Tasks

  • Guides the prescription and provision of medication through standardized forms
  • Develops orientation material, structure and process for SANAD physicians
  • Follow-up and supports medical team with training, advocacy and research responsibilities
  • Guides the implementation of SANAD’s advocacy plan for hospice and palliative care nationally in coordination with QRD unit
  • Assists in ongoing revisions and development of the competency based-approach framework at SANAD including main document, policies, procedures and competencies in coordination with the QRD unit
  • Follow-up the monitoring and evaluation plan to ensure proper use of clinical policies and competencies of the medical and nursing team in coordination with the QRD unit
  • Identifies internal training needs based on the evaluation process, and design and implement annual training schedule
  • Works with departments to revise work plans per unit and create a timeline annually  
  • Facilitates interdepartmental communication through supporting Nursing Director, Medical Director, and head of QRD unit with project development and implementation, communicating updates and weekly plans with the team, and facilitating collaboration on shared tasks or projects.
  • On Quality, Research and Development Unit Level, contributes to:
    • The internal quality assurance and quality improvement projects  
    • The development of external training material and evaluation of trainings
    • The delivery of awareness sessions for healthcare professionals
    • The collaboration with potential partners and funders for new projects planning and implementation
    • The planning and write up of proposals for development of palliative hospice care services among identified stakeholders
    • The supervision of the physicians’ involvement in newly developed palliative/hospice care programs/services  

 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Medical degree from an accredited School of Medicine
  • Current license to practice medicine in Lebanon with a minimum of 2 years’ experience  

(Experience in hospice and palliative care strongly preferred)

  • Able to communicate effectively in Arabic and in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Knowledge in computer software applications such as Microsoft Office
