  1. The Organisation:

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls. We believe in the power and potential of every child, but know this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion, and discrimination. Working together with children, young people, supporters and partners, we strive for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges girls and vulnerable children face. We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood and enable children to prepare for – and respond to – crises and adversity. We place a specific focus on girls and young women, who are most often left behind. We have been building powerful partnerships for children for more than 80 years, and are now active in more than 70 countries. Plan International has had a presence in Lebanon since 2017, obtaining formal registration in 2019, and has programmes throughout the country (Beirut, Mount-Lebanon, South, North, and Bekaa).

  1. Background and Rationale

The inclusion of PSS services is pertinent for the provision of quality education services in the aftermath of any crisis. Evidence overwhelmingly shows that the exposure to toxic stress (as a result of armed conflict, poverty, domestic violence, neglect, etc.) has negative and enduring consequences for a child’s development into adulthood and cognitive, physical and socio-emotional wellbeing. Educational personnel are key players in enhancing the quality, safety and inclusion in learning environments for children through the promotion of PSS activities and self-care, for themselves as well as the learners. Based on this, as well as lessons learned from ongoing projects in informal learning centers implemented by Plan International, the proposed intervention focuses of the inclusion of specialized training and Training of Trainers (ToT) to enhance PSS mechanisms for teachers and students and provide educational personnel the tools to provide a conducive learning environment for children who have been through difficult situations.

Project Overview:

The project promotes self-care and psychosocial well-being for children, education personnel & frontline workers within Plan’s existing protection and education programming as well as through coordination with other actors in North Lebanon. The action consists of the following components: 1) develop two training manuals, on Self-Care for Humanitarian Aid & Development Workers, as well as on Working with Children in Difficult Situations, 2) train a total of 60 education personnel and humanitarian aid & development workers in Beirut and North of Lebanon through Training of Trainers (ToT) sessions and 3) enhance the quality of the education through implementing and monitoring daily activities focused on PSS and self-care in the learning environment, as well as creating an evidence-base for further rolling out of the trainings throughout Lebanon. The action will fill the lack of PSS mechanisms identified by teachers by providing them with accessible tools to strengthen their own psychosocial well-being and positively affect the adolescent boys and girls they teach. As the training manuals are currently being finalized, the assignment of the Consultant will feed into components 2 and 3 of the action.
