MERCY CORPS - Call For Proposals - Apprenticeship to support trainees in acquiring practical knowledge

FORSA apprenticeship (work based learning) component aims to support businesses by covering costs of three months apprenticeship fees while supporting trainees in acquiring practical knowledge. The trainees level is determined by the business owners and the trainees are selected jointly with the business owners to ensure they are a good fit for the enterprise. 

 

The business must be located in either Saida or Bekaa (Central or West Bekaa areas) and should be active in the construction sector (Aluminium, Carpentry works, Electrical installation and repair, Plumbing, Painting,...) or the agrofood processing sector.

 

 

2. The business will benefit from the following:

 

  1. Mercy Corps will identify potential candidates based on the profiles needed by the businesses;
  2. The business owner has the opportunity to interview the candidate jointly with Mercy Corps and select the one(s) that correspond to his/her requirements;
  3. Mercy Corps will cover the full salary of the Apprentices for three months;
  4. The business has a risk-free trial period to assess employment potential of youth;
  5. Mercy Corps will provide all Apprentices with soft skills and orientation sessions before they start the apprenticeship; (existing employees can benefit from the soft skills training, whereas the total number soft skills attendees will not exceed 15).

 

3. The business will have the following responsibilities:

 

  1. Identify apprenticeship opportunities/positions and develop the job description and the learning objectives with support of Mercy Corps;
  2. Attend a business orientation session before the start of the apprenticeship;
  3. Sign a three months contract with the Apprentice;
  4. Productively engage the apprentice(s) in work activities and training related to the business for a duration of three months, full time; ensure that the apprentice(s) work activities contribute to his/her skills learning;
  5. Provide necessary work orientation, training, and safety instructions and provide a safe, healthy, and respectful work environment with access to appropriate equipment and materials as required for the apprentice to safely perform his/her tasks,
  6. Cover the Apprentice insurance and share the relevant documents with Mercy Corps;
  7. Accurately review, comment, and sign Apprentice’s monthly reports that will be prepared by the business;
  8. Monitor, support and objectively assess the apprentice’s skills and knowledge competence, work performance and behavior during the course of the apprenticeship;
  9. Agree not to hold the apprentice or Mercy Corps liable for any damage to equipment or materials during the course of the apprentice’s work training;
  10. Inform Mercy Corps of any issues relevant to the Apprentice’s attendance, commitment and work performance;
  11. Grant Mercy Corps access to the workplace in order to monitor the Apprentice through announced and unannounced monitoring visits, and provide feedback on quality of their work.
  12. Complete a performance evaluation of the Apprentice at the end of the three months;

 

 

4. Selection criteria:

 

The following criteria will be used to select businesses applying for the program:

Ability to propose learning objectives per month for each Apprentice;

Ability to nominate a focal point in the company to train each Apprentice;

Proof of past and/or future work in the sector (three references);

Ability to cover the transportation cost for the apprentice;
