The French Institute for the Near East (IFPO) and Lebanon Support,
With the support of WAFAW,
Cordially invite you to a talk on:
Uprisings in the Arab world: the consecration of counterrevolutions?
By:Frédéric Vairel, associate professor of Political Studies at the University of Ottawa, and co-author of Soulèvements et recompositions politiques dans le monde arabe, PUM, 2014.
With discussant:Mariam Younes, PhD candidate, University of Roskilde in Denmark
Introduction by:Vincent Geisser, (IFPO/CNRS/WAFAW), “The revolution has just started”
During the 2011 popular uprisings, the same thing did not happen everywhere in the Middle East and North Africa region. Put another way, Tunisia is not Morocco, which in turn is different from Lebanon. Most of the literature about the uprisings focused either on the unfolding of mobilisations or on regime responses. This talk proposes to consider together “the regime side” – decisions made by authorities – and the “street side” – contentious politics. Contrary to pessimistic predictions, the "Arab revolutions" have somehow impacted the Middle Eastern societies, contributing to the establishment of a new relationship between citizens and "politics". Hence the necessity to rethink “revolution" beyond mere political and institutional aspects.
The talk will be held in English, with possibility of discussion in Arabic.
Date: Tuesday, 16th of June 2015, at 6:00pmLocation: Lebanon Support’s office (Adlieh, Najib Azouri st, Shaghouri bldg, 3rd floor - follow this link for the map)For further information and confirmation of attendance, contact us on: [email protected]
