Access To Healthcare For Syrian Refugees In Lebanon. The Reproduction Of A Failed System?

Lebanon Support cordially invites you to a roundtable on:

Access to healthcare for Syrian Refugees in Lebanon. The reproduction of a failed system?

Presentation of primary fieldwork findings by Lebanon Support

The ineffective public healthcare system in Lebanon is leading its residents to resort to private health services, which implies high costs for patients. In this context – already prior to the Syrian refugee crisis – NGOs, religious organisations, and charities have taken over certain areas of healthcare, thus leading to a highly fragmented distribution of medical provision. Since 2011, over 1.3 million Syrian refugees have been registered in Lebanon. Research findings show that this influx of refugees has increasingly added pressure on Lebanon’s already fragile provision of healthcare.
Our endeavour in this roundtable is to examine the privatised, irregular, and rather ad hoc, provision of healthcare in Lebanon, which is generally more curative than preventive. In this vein, the discussion will revolve around the extent to which vulnerable Lebanese and non-Lebanese residing in Lebanon, notably Syrian refugees, are able to access health services. It will highlight the main findings from our research which shows that the Syrian refugee crisis has not only magnified, but even reproduced already existing challenges and shortcomings of a highly privatised, fragmented, and inefficient healthcare.
This research project is in partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Office of Syria and Iraq.
