Background:

When catastrophe hits, International Medical Corps is often one of the first humanitarian aid organizations on the scene providing rapid and effective aid that saves lives, reduces suffering, and promotes self-reliance.
International Medical Corps: provides safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient centered care; offers needs-based response according to the context and type of Sudden Onset Disaster and/or outbreak in the affected nation: adopts a human rights-based approach to their response; ensures they are accessible to all sections of the population affected by the SOD and/or outbreak particularly the vulnerable; and treats patients in a medically ethical manner consistent with the World Medical Association Medical Ethics Manual.
International Medical Corps is accountable to: patients and communities; host government, Ministry of Health; our organization and donors. International Medical Corps
commits to a coordinated response under the national health emergency management authorities. International Medical Corps collaborates with the national health system, the cluster and the humanitarian community.

Job Purpose:

Provide support to the case management team through the Identification of individuals in need of MHPSS services, provision of accurate referrals to MH supported PHCCs, integration of MHPSS services into selected PHCCs, and conduct awareness sessions and home visits to beneficiaries.  

Main Responsibilities:

  • Identify families or individuals in need of psychosocial support or counselling through outreach activities and home visits to refugees and host communities’ households.
  • Provide accurate referrals when needed; i.e., the roving social worker will refer clients to IMC supported PHCCs in addition to other local NGOs and INGOs.  Moreover, the roving social worker will dispense information about the various programs and services offered by IMC and its affiliates. 
  • Coordinate the management of the mental health referrals between IMC Community based mental health care centers and the mhGAP supported primary healthcare centers or IMC MHPSS/health supported PHCCs.
  • Promote the integration of mental health into primary healthcare at up to 5 PHCs within a geographical area
  • Conduct awareness sessions on Mental Health topics and Provide reports on awareness raising and other PSS services that contain information regarding attendance, age, gender, nationality and impact of the session on participants.
  • Provide psychoeducation sessions for MHPSS clients and their respective families.
  • Conduct interviews with service users (Refugees and host population) and their families to assess and review their situation.
  • Complete intake assessments, evaluations, treatment recommendations, reviews, and other documentation as necessary. 
  • Conduct home visits to clients when needed
  • Work closely with IMC MHPSS manager to support case management teams in implementation of MHPSS activities
  • Prioritize trainings and team meetings in IMC as required by the direct supervisor.
  • Work to be well integrated in the local community and have a good knowledge about the area, region and its population.
  • Build close relationships with all active organizations in the area of operations and maintain constant relationships.
  • will be responsible for filling all relevant tools and should maintain regular updates in close coordination with the case management team.

  • Experience in working closely with community members throughout a program cycle
  • Experience in or understanding of program accountability principles
  • Knowledge of, respect and empathy for the communities we are working with
  • Commitment to championing community and partner points of view
  • Strong understanding of the project cycle and of M&E systems
  • Good interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Non-discriminatory and readiness to involve men, women, girls and boys from diverse backgrounds, particularly the most marginalized segments of the community
  • Very good listening and facilitation skills – capable of managing and facilitating group discussions with program participants, local officials, partners and all levels of staff
  • Ability to mobilize people – to develop and maintain relationships with staff and communities to ensure their participation in International Medical Corps ways of working
