Humedica, founded in 1979 and situated in Kaufbeuren (Bavaria), is an international non-governmental organization funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. In Lebanon, humedica runs one Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) serving approximately 30 informal tented settlements (ITS) in the Bekaa valley, providing free primary health care and medication for Syrian refugees. In addition, humedica is supporting Primary Health Care Centers (PHCs) (under the administration of Ministry of Public Health) for both Lebanese and Syrian patients.

Overall Role and Responsibility

The Nurse position operates under the authority of humedica Country Coordinator (CC) Lebanon. The main task of the Nurse will be supporting the humedica Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) that operates in the Informal Tented Settlements (ITSs) in Bekaa. In addition, the nurse will support patients that require specialized or secondary health care. The nurse will seek - together with the patients - solutions to get access to required further medical treatments.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Knowing, promoting, implementing and following up on hygiene standards and precautions. Ensuring COVID-19 safety measures are implemented.
  • Conducting a triage for the patients of the MMU, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them immediately to the doctor when necessary
  • Filling the patient’s medical history, allergies, vital signs, physician diagnosis and exams and prepare patients before examination through the physicians of the MMU.
  • Assisting during consultations, outreach and other medical procedures. Participating in health education of the patient, also family and community when necessary.
  • Assisting pharmacist in providing patients with the medical drugs according to the physician’s prescription and prepare in coordination with the pharmacist the visit of the next day by replenishing the medical drugs’ stock.
  • To ensure that medical equipment is properly operated and maintained and ensure supply needs for the MMU operations
  • Identifying Sexually Gender Based Violence survivors and referring them to the medical team so they can receive the necessary treatment.
  • Support the referral of patients who require specialized/secondary medical treatment. Collect pertinent information and provide appropriate actions for patients who are seeking emergency care
  • Liaising and networking with partner organizations, public institutions (MoPH, PHCs, hospitals), UN agencies and health partners e.g. for referrals and medical services
  • Filing, documentation, management and regular follow up with individual patients in informal tented settlements (ITS)

Contract duration: depending on funds

Working hours: 8.30 – 5:00, one hour lunch break

Post based in Zahle and Central Bekaa with occasional field visits

 

Minimum requirements:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor degree in nursing
  • Proven work experience as a nurse in humanitarian projects
  • Strong knowledge of the established Lebanese Health System in cooperation with UNHCR and INGOs in Bekaa Valley

 

Languages

  • Fluent Arabic and good English language is mandatory
