Fundación Promoción Social (Social Promotion Foundation) works to build a culture of solidarity centred on the individual and the need for better and more dignified living conditions, work, freedom and social participation for all. It was founded in Madrid in 1987. Its activity in the field of international cooperation has been realized in more than 200 projects in different countries of Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean Region, where the Foundation has worked continuously since 1992. Working in the Middle East is one of the Foundation’s priorities. In 2004, the Fundación Promoción Social obtained General Consultative Status with United Nations ECOSOC, and in 2005 it was awarded Qualified NGDO status by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

Lebanon is the first country in the Middle East region in which the Foundation began to work. The first activities were carried out on the ground in 1992, and the first project, co-funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation and the European Union and aimed at strengthening the economic activity of farmers in northern Lebanon, got under way the following year. This intervention would soon be followed by others to meet the most urgent needs of the population during that period: rural development, primary health care, rehabilitation and reconstruction, support to PED, aid for refugees and people displaced by the war, etc Taking into account the situation in the region and the type of intervention, other aspects have also been considered in each one of the actions, such as gender equality, environmental sustainability and support for social minorities, which in the context of the region require specific attention. This process of coordination centred on local strategies, essential for achieving the Millennium Goals, has enabled the Foundation to focus its work on priority sector interventions in this region such as farming development, disability, education, aid for refugees, people displaced by the war, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and primary health care. Social Promotion Foundation provides Mental Health services through a multidisciplinary Joint Program with the Lebanese Ministry of Health and the Lebanese Ministry of Social Affairs focusing the activities on a clinic located in Zahle (Beka´a Valley). Operating in Lebanon since 1992, Social Promotion Foundation activities aim to improve the living conditions and inclusion of persons with psychological disabilities (PwPD) through individual and specific attention, Socio-psychological Support and ad hoc MH Management & First Aid Response Protocols for Frontliners working in such issue. Furthermore, Social Promotion focuses on the promotion and protection of the rights of PwPD through capacity building according a rights based approach in humanitarian action; training of local civil society institutions in inclusive programming; and through community-based activities to promote the non-discrimination and inclusion of PwPD in community like full Lebanese citizens, providing at the same time the access to NH services to Syrian refugees. Social Promotion Foundation also provides services of comprehensive rehabilitation, accessibility and inclusion for persons with physical disabilities of all ages. Operating in the region since 2006, Social Promotion Foundation activities aim to improve the living conditions and inclusion of persons with disabilities (PwD) or functional impairments through the provision of mobility aids and physiotherapy services, awareness raising and through facilitation of inclusive recreational activities. Furthermore, Social Promotion Foundation focuses on the promotion and protection of the rights of PwD through capacity building according a rights based approach in humanitarian action; training of local civil society institutions in inclusive programming; and through community-based activities to promote the non-discrimination and inclusion of PwD in community and recreational activities.
