General Description of task(s) and objectives to be achieved

Background

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is currently implementing a project funded by the Government of Norway.

The project is entitled: “Prevention of Agrochemical Pollution in the Upper Litani River Basin”. The project is being implemented by the FAO in close collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture. It responds to the pollution of the Lake Quaraoun caused by the excessive use of chemical agricultural inputs such as chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

 

The Junior National Agricultural Field Officer is expected to assist the project in field operations to deliver the planned activities and achieving project objectives.   The Junior National Agricultural Field Officer reports directly to the Project Manager- CTA, will specifically assume the following the duties and responsibilities:

  • Conduct field missions within the project areas (Baalbek, Zahle and West-Bekaa) to identify/maintain comparative pilot plots sites and farmers;
  • Conduct day to day field work to establish and maintain the project’s comparative pilot plots on selected crops;
  • Conduct regular follow-up on implementation of crop management practices within the comparative pilot plots/ (land preparation, planting, fertilization, pest management, irrigation etc.);
  • Keep records of all implemented measures/ practices and details of used inputs (fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation material, etc); quantities, types and costs in addition to labour and other costs;
  • Collect and keep records about the farmers (beneficiaries) agricultural practices and quantities, types and cost of different inputs used in addition to labour and other costs;
  • Create and update reports/tables to compare between traditional and implemented IPM/GAP practices;
  • Create and update beneficiaries’ databases including GPS locations;
  • Collect and analyse relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related information, data and/or statistics to support the delivery of projects outcome, outputs and activities;
  • Collect soil, water and crop samples for analysis in LARI labs;
  • Undertake analysis, provide technical input for plans and report and edits/revises technical/scientific documents and agricultural inputs technical specifications;
  • Liaise and collaborate with the beneficiaries of the project for the good implementation of the project activities;
  • Collaborate in the development of training tools and materials and the organization of training workshops/seminars/field days and sessions, etc.; 
  • Participate in the organization, conduct and follow-up of meetings, consultations and conferences, the development/production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners;
  • Provide support to project consultants and staff assigned to the project;
  • Assist, if requested, in briefing meetings for the benefit of FAO Representative, Steering Committee, and senior related staff of partners;
  • Undertake other project related tasks as requested by the Project Manager

Profile and minimum expertise required

  • University degree in agriculture - crop protection and/ or production;
  • Three years of relevant experience in practical field production management of field crops specifically potato lettuce and other rotation crops;
  • Proven experience in agricultural extension or farmers/beneficiaries outreach
  • Good written and oral working knowledge in English and Arabic;
  • Computer literacy of the Microsoft package including word and Excel or another database software
