Creative Space Beirut
Creative Space Beirut is a social enterprise that provides structures and resources for the development of progressive design practices in the region. Through its tuition-free school of design, fashion label, and online retail platform, the enterprise intertwines technical and creative education with various businesses and socio-cultural initiatives. This has yielded a holistic and critical approach to design, education and production.
Creative Space Beirut is committed to conscious, critical growth. It works to galvanize it’s revenue generating branches in order to develop a fully independent, ‘circular’, financial model. This model protects the enterprise from external influences and safeguards its commitment to inclusivity and progress. It allows the enterprise to diversify and empower educational branches by expanding programs and enhancing curriculums, while generating healthy livelihoods, equal opportunity, and ethical practices in the creative industry.
Creative Space Beirut nurtures a space of resistance and adaptation in an environment facing great socio-political, economic, and ecological challenges. It is precisely this context that warrants the most innovation, and the greatest leaps in design practices.
The enterprise advocates an emancipated future, where the gaps of prejudice and inequality are closed through education and conscious labor, by way of design.
CSB was launched in 2011 with the pilot version of Creative Space Beirut School of Design (CSB-SD). Since then, 45 students have been educated under 42 instructors and 320 individuals have participated in workshops, fashion shows, exhibitions and other activities within the ecosystem. With the resources, training and support provided by CSB-SD, students have gone on to pursue masters programs and apprenticeships internationally, teach at various local institutions, enjoy illustrious careers in the fashion industry, and have launched internationally recognized and awarded brands.
In-house brands and production projects support tailors from vulnerable backgrounds, and maintain a healthy ecological footprint by relying primarily on materials donated from excess within the fashion industry.
