Cldh Trains Future Journalists To Give A Human Rights Perspective To Their News Stories

Although the press in Lebanon deals with Human Rights-related issues on a daily basis, those rights are rarely the focus of news stories. Founded in 2006 to fight against arbitrary detention, torture, and enforced disappearance, the Lebanese Center for Human Rights (CLDH) has been monitoring the Lebanese press since its inception and organized over the last months a series of trainings in order to improve the media coverage of Human Rights-related issues. On Wednesday 15th May, a training session entitled “Human Rights in the Media” will be provided to media students and young journalists. “A basic knowledge of Human Rights principles is a fundamental requirement for journalists to be able to report on news with a human rights perspective. So learning how to tell a good story while at the same time respecting and promoting rights such as women’s or detainees’ rights is a step towards the amelioration of journalism standards in Lebanon,” explains Marie Daunay, Director of CLDH. After the training, the participants will have the opportunity to publish their features on the CLDH’s media monitoring website and in June, five of them will be rewarded during the CLDH Human Rights Award Ceremony. This project, as well as the CLDH’s media monitoring platform, was funded by the Office of the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) of the U.S. Department of State.
