Position: Community Worker
Contract duration: 15 months (from March 2019 till May 2020)
Salary: $1,500 per month(including NSSF) as a full timer.
Project title: A Pathway to Shared Community-Based Interventions
Project Description: From August 2018 to August 2020, this project will build the capacity of 180 community
members from marginalized communities in Beirut, Lebanon, through the
implementation of 18 creative workshops. In addition, 6 community groups will
be formed and guided to develop and implement 6 community-based interventions.
Expected Results (ER) of the project:
ER1: The capacity of 180 community members
built through 18 creative workshops implemented (9 workshops during the project’s
first year, 9 others during the project’s second year)
ER2: 6 community groups formed and guided
to develop and implement 6 community-based interventions (1 group formed and
one project developed at each of the three neighborhoods per year)
ER3: Micro-projects supported and
implemented (1 project implemented at each of the three neighborhoods each
year).
General Purpose of the Position: The Community Worker is the Focal
Point for the project with the communities revolving around the three public libraries
of Beirut in Bachoura, Geitaoui and Monot areas, in which the workshops will
take place. The Community Worker will play the role of facilitator whom
will brainstorm, guide and lead the communities in developing ideas for the
workshops that are a priority for them and that are feasible within the
available budget. The Community worker will work closely with the Executive
Manager and Project Manager as well as with all the concerned team members
involved at Assabil by reporting closely to them and coordinating closely with
each of the Libraries’ Coordinators. This position is a part time position that
entails 25 hours per week between Office and field work within the range of
Beirut.
Main Responsibilities of the Position
1.1 To reach out and identify relevant organizations and institutions working with
the diverse target groups, as well as neighborhood community members (social
workers in action) in the areas of Bachoura, Geitaoui and Monot.
1.2 To set-up participatory processes and conduct focused group discussions / public brainstorming
sessions in coordination with the Project Manager and the Library Coordinators through
which the creative workshop topics are determined.
1.3 To assist in the organization of 18 creative workshops where diverse members
(immigrants, refugees, marginalized…) are trained side by side, with focus on
women and youth. As well as maintaining daily attendance registers and a
weekly and monthly inventory sheets for each of the workshops
1.4 To assist in the recruitment of the community members from the creative
workshop participants.
1.5 To facilitate workshops with the community groups to help them come up with
their community-based interventions aimed to improve their neighborhoods. 3
projects will be selected for implementation each year.
1.6 To assist in the preparation of the annual celebration event in which the
results of the creative workshops are displayed and the micro community-based
projects are presented.
1.7. To support in the follow up, the support and the monitoring of the
implementation of the 6 community-oriented micro-projects. Community members
will be guided all throughout the implementation process.
1.8. To assist in and facilitate donors or any relevant party’s visits to the
project’s sites

Knowledge, Skills and Personal Attributes
- University degree in psychosocial or social studies
- Excellent communication, facilitation and mediation skills.
- Strong organizational and team working skills.
- Strong conflict resolution skills.
- Good cultural awareness and sensitivity of the areas of Bachoura, Geitaoui,
Monot and the surroundings - Highly approachable, trustworthy and confidential.
- Punctuality and respect for applicable rules and procedures.
Relevant Experience
- Minimum of 3-5 years of working with communities in social interventions and development
projects (previous experience in the 3 areas of Bachoura, Geitaoui, Monot
and their surrounding is a plus). - Experience in leading focus group and/or facilitating social meetings and brainstorming
sessions - Proficiency in Arabic and English
- Strong Microsoft Office skills.
