Altcity Seeks Support From The Crowd To Establish Startup Space

BEIRUT, 31 August 2012 –AltCity, a media/tech/social impact collaboration space in Hamra, Beirut, has launched a crowd-funding campaign to set up a social impact accelerator space. Through this online campaign, AltCity aims to raise $25,000 to finance essential renovations and setup costs, which will enable this innovative social enterprise to incubate a number of other emerging social ventures in Lebanon, starting January 2013.
Launched online on www.indiegogo.com/alterlife on August 24th and open only until September 29th, funds raised will go towards the cost of A/Cs, partitions, furniture, stairs, railings and other basic equipment necessary for establishing the social impact startup co-working and acceleration space. For all contributions over $5, supporters win “perks” ranging from a public “thank you” to the chance to name your own room within the 600m2AltCity space.
AltCity is seeking contributions from supporters around the world. Anyone with a credit or debit card, or a PayPal account, can contribute.
One week in, $2,965 has already been raised. Elias Mhanna, Middle East analyst and author of the well-known blog “Qifa Nabki”, voiced his support, stating in a post: “There are many ways to help support the project, and I’m putting my money where my mouth is. You should too!”
Alongside this crowd-funding campaign, AltCity launched the first episode of their new mini-series named “ALTerLife”. These simple but amusing videos aim to demonstrate how AltCity assists freelancers, entrepreneurs, journalists, students, researchers, or anyone else needing somewhere quiet and inspiring to work. The first episode features a student entrepreneur named Ramzi. Click here to view it.
AltCity, a social enterprise established in 2011, aims to radically expand access to the tools, resources, and spaces that enable innovative, creative, high impact, and socially-relevant media and entrepreneurial initiatives. Once fully renovated, AltCity will be a multifunctional space comprising public cafe, co-working desks, private offices, an event space, meeting/training rooms, and more. AltCity will provide business and organizational development services, creative workspaces, and access to media tools and streams, plus a variety of trainings, exhibits, and events organized by the AltCity team and the broader community.
Since July 2011, AltCity has hosted over 80 events, organized in collaboration with over 30 other community organizations, attracting some 2400 visitors.
