Arbitrary Detention: How Vulnerable Are You?

The Human Rights and Peace Club and Alef cordially invite you to ARBITRARY DETENTION (AD): HOW VULNERABLE ARE YOU? Following the documentary screening, 12 Angry Lebanese, join us for a panel discussion to shed light on the reality of AD in Lebanon. The program is as follows:
6:00- 7:20 pm: Screening of Documentary- 12 Angry Lebanese The film follows an all-male group of adult inmates residing in Roumieh Prison who experienced the pioneer practice of Drama Therapy/Theatre in 2008-2009 led by a female Drama Therapist Zeina Daccach.
7:20- 7:35 pm: ALEF- Presentation Alef is a non- partisan NGO and will present their findings from their AD report. They will target the definition of AD, its root causes in Lebanon, the rights of the detainee and the impact on youth as one of the most vulnerable populations to it.
7:35- 7:50 pm: Dr. Wael Kheir- Legalities Of AD Dr. Wael Kheir is a respected professor in PSPA faculty at the American University of Beirut, lawyer and managing director of the NGO: Foundation for Human and Humanitarian Rights in Lebanon. He has an extensive history advocating for human rights and will address the legalities of AD.
7:50- 8:00 pm: Dr. Joseph Halit- Prison Health Expert Dr. Joseph Halit is the Chief Doctor of Medical Issues in Lebanese prisons and a former victim of AD. Combining his own experience and expert knowledge, he will describe the environment and the health threats/ vulnerabilities of AD.
8:00- 8:10 pm: Jillian Grisel- The Gendered Experience of AD Jillian Grisel is a graduate student at AUB and is part of a research team exploring perceptions of state and non-state actors in mental health service provision for female prisoners. Currently, she is also designing a somatic therapy mental health intervention in the Verdun prison grounded in participatory methods.
8:10- 8:30 pm: Questions and Answers
