Two Experts are required by Adyan Foundation to contribute to the development of a Media Literacy against Hate Speech Course in Arabic, for the 7th and 8th grades’ students of Lebanese schools, as part of the “Media Literacy against Hate Speech in Lebanon” Adyan Project.

The experts will be required to work individually and collaboratively on the following tasks:

Conduct a research about the existing of digital media literacy and countering hate speech programs in Grades 7 and 8

Conduct a research on Media Literacy Trends, existing materials and literature around this subject

Conduct learning needs assessments based on focus groups with schools directors, educators and students

Prepare the content of the course about digital media literacy from approved sources, and based on approved templates

Design and develop the Arabic Media Literacy Course, its content outline, learning objectives, activities, assignments, timeline, and assessment tools

Collaborate with the e-learning manager and instructional designers in creating the electronic format of the course

Collaborate together and with the project management team for the best implementation of this mission and the timely delivery of its outputs

The Consultancy will involve for each expert approximately 12 days over a period of three months (September - November 2020). If required, the Consultancy can be carried out remotely, via video conference.

After the course development, the Experts may be invited to apply for another Consultancy service, for training and coaching the teachers during the course implementation. 

 

2. Background & Context

                2.1 Adyan Foundation

Founded in 2006, Adyan is a foundation for diversity, solidarity and human dignity. Registered as an NGO in Lebanon, Adyan works locally, regionally and internationally for pluralism, inclusive citizenship, community resilience and spiritual solidarity, through home-grown solutions in education, media, policy, and intercultural and interreligious relations.

Adyan’s four departments run projects that promote diversity, interreligious collaboration, conflict prevention and education for inclusive citizenship. These include educational clubs in schools, dialogue platforms for religious leaders, media projects including the production and dissemination of short films, and discussion events with experts to create policy papers on issues such as preventing violent extremism.  

2.2 About Media Literacy against Hate Speech in Lebanon Project

The “Media Literacy against Hate Speech in Lebanon”, is a new two-year project carried out by Adyan Foundation and its international partner Act Church of Sweden, and is implemented with support from the Swedish Institute, via the Creative Force Fund. This project is expected to strengthen sustainable peace in Lebanon via narratives of solidarity and human dignity promoted by young people and via the media, and to increase positive discourse on pluralism and coexistence in Lebanon and globally.

Practically, this project is designed to:

  • Increase the resilience of young people to sectarian, divisive narratives, and instead promote narratives that foster positive attitudes to diversity, gender equality, freedom of religion and belief, and human rights
  • Encourage the creation of responsible media content countering hate speech
  • Encourage decision makers to embed media literacy training in the Lebanese educational system

3. Details of Consultancy

                3.1 Summary

The experts will work alongside Adyan Team on the design and development of a Media Literacy against Hate Speech Course, as a pilot one, for the 7th and 8th grades’ students in Lebanese private schools.

The course is expected to include around 12 classes/sessions, and can be either integrated within the formal program as part of a related subject, or as an extra-curriculum activity.

                3.2 Activities

 

Activity 1: Write a Literature Review and conduct a research on Media Literacy trends and baseline studies.

Activity 2: Conduct focus groups with schools directors, educators and students to assess the learning needs.

Activity 3: Develop the syllabus and content outlines with teaching guidelines.

Activity 4: Develop the course, with learning objectives, content, activities, resources, assignments, timeline, and assessment tools.

Activity 5: Collaborate with instructional designers to create the electronic version of the course.

3.3 Timeframe & Number of Days

  • Activities 1-3: approx. 4 days (September - mid-October)
  • Activity 4: approx. 5 days (mid-October – mid-November)
  • Activity 5: approx. 3 days (November)

                3.4 Budget Range

The day of expertise is paid USD 250. Due taxes, bank charges or similar costs are deduced from the fess based on the contract.

Exact number of days per expert will be defined after in the contract.

                3.5 Contracting Organization Oversight

Adyan Foundation is commissioning this course development and will be responsible for managing it and any following evaluations. The expert will report to the Project Coordinator.

 

4. Expert(s) Profile

Education

  • BA degree in a field related to media & communication, and/or curriculum development or any other related field. Master’s degree is a plus.

Experience

  • Considerable knowledge and expertise in Education and curriculum and educational materials development, and/or Media literacy. Expertise in online learning is an asset.
  • Proven record of accomplishment in delivering high quality educational materials (course, curriculum).
  • Skilled and experienced in conducting fo­cus groups including online.

Competencies

  • Sensitive to and respectful of religious, social and cultural differences and comfortable with working and communicating across difference, including the ability to communicate complex ideas in accessible ways and gather data from and with partners across society
  • Strives to contribute to collaborative tasks with other experts and team members for the achievement of the project’s goals

Language Requirements

  • Highly proficient in spoken and written Arabic and English
