About the project:

A consortium of six organizations, including Médecins du Monde (MdM), Skoun, Abaad, Amel, Embrace and Humanity and Inclusion (HI), supported by the Agence Francaise de Development (AFD), aims to improve the opportunities for individuals living in Lebanon to enjoy the best possible mental health and wellbeing. The consortium aims to reach its objective through the development of a community-based Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) and Substance Use (SU) system offering appropriate, quality and inclusive services to all people living in Lebanon, particularly the most vulnerable groups and people at risk. The specific activities of the project target the different levels of the social ecological model with activities designed and aimed at the individual, interpersonal, organizational, community and public policy level. One of the three outcomes of the project is to strengthen the knowledge and capacities of relevant stakeholders (Journalists are one component of the stakeholder) on MHPSS and SU challenges, good practices and rights of concerned people.

OBJECTIVES/ PURPOSE OF ASSIGNMENT:

Mental disorders affect one in four of us! Despite this big number, persons with mental health conditions tend to hide their illness because of stigma and discrimination.  With support and care people can recover from mental disorders and have a normal and productive life.

Media, responsible and evidence-based, are at the heart of this response and have a leading role to play. By promoting true facts about mental health and substance use, media can help people recover and lead successful lives. Media can also help communities better understand mental health issues and, therefore, be supportive and caring.

In 2019, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) issued a practical guide PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR MEDIA PROFESSIONALS ON THE COVERAGE OF MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USEto help media professionals produce successful media outputs on mental health and substance use. It was prepared based on findings from interviews with media professionals. It is aimed to explore their needs and the challenges they face when addressing mental health and substance use topics. The guide is designed to be used by journalists, news reporters, anchors, television shows hosts, social media bloggers, script writers and other media professionals. It is contextualized and culturally adapted to the media scene in Lebanon so as to answer questions related to mental health and substance use.

The specific objectives of the assignment are:

  1. To design a Training Module based on the practical guide. Training Module should include: Learning objectives, delivery format, exercises and activities, material produced, tools to implement, requirements and needs/logistics and an evaluation process.
