Conferences on Social Entrepreneurship and BADAEL Project

1. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

“Building Alternative Development Assets and Entrepreneurial Learning in Lebanon’’ (BADAEL) is a project funded by European Union Regional Trust Fund – MADAD and implemented by Oxfam, Beyond Reform and Development (BRD), UTOPIA and Association Najdeh. BADAEL aims at supporting entrepreneurial initiatives with a social impact to better the socio-economic situation, with a focus on seven areas in North Lebanon and Bekaa (Tripoli, Koura, Minieh, Naher El Bared camp, Baddawi camp, Jebjennine, and Saadnayel). BADAEL is the first livelihoods and social stability project adopted exclusively for Lebanon under an early EU Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis (EUTF) Board decision. Since 2017, Badael achieved the following

 

  • Supporting the engage local communities’ members to identify local needs and opportunities in their areas.

 

  • Training more than 9000 individuals, especially youth and women, on facilitation, leadership and social entrepreneurship skills;

 

  • Launching a competition and then providing financial and technical support to 46 Social Entrepreneurial (SE) initiatives responding to the challenges in the communities;

 

  • Organising networking activities to advance Social Entrepreneurship (SE) as a way to support socio-economic development led by members of the communities.

 

2. PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOPS

As part of the project, Oxfam is organizing three conferences; one is each of Beirut, Bekaa, and North Lebanon, between April and May 2020.  The overall goal of the conferences is to promote SE, share the lessons learned and experiences from BADAEL project, and act as a networking platform for a wide range of stakeholders. Specifically, the conferences aim to fulfil three main objectives, namely:

  • Objective 1: Reflect on the results of the case studies and the understanding of the SE concept in our communities;
  • Objective 2: Support the SEs supported by Badael by connecting them to stakeholders who might be interested in supporting their business;
  • Objective 3: Offer an opportunity for organizations working in similar fields to come together and interact, exploring potential for future collaboration.

To meet these objectives, each conference will be organized over one full day, and will consist of:

  • Expert speaker(s) (probably from outside of Lebanon) who will discuss SE as a tool for strengthening social stability, improving local economic situation, and building community resilience;
  • Thematic sessions to present and discuss the results of the case studies;
  • Exhibition for the Badael SEs to showcase their journey and promote their products/services.

While all conferences are guided by similar objectives, they address different targets:

  • The North Lebanon and Bekaa conferences will target local stakeholders, local authority representatives, social entrepreneurship ecosystem actors, academics and private sector business representatives;
  • The Beirut conference will target the stakeholders, in addition to national public officials, NGOs and representatives of donor community.

To support in the organization of these conferences, Oxfam is looking for a conference organizer who holds a broad experience in organizing such events.

 

3. EXPECTED RESPONSIBILITIES

The consultant is expected to take full responsibility of the below responsibilities in coordination with BADAEL team:

  • Invite and coordinate with the speakers and presenters (bios, abstracts, papers, power point presentations, etc…);
  • Book the flights and the accommodation for the speakers;
  • Book the conference venues and manage all the venue-related logistical matters (room preparation, equipment, catering…);
  • Identify, manage, and coordinate with instant interpreters;
  • Design the visibility material (invitation cards, rollups, backdrops, tags, folders, pens, etc…) for the conference in compliance with the EU regulations;
  • Prepare, print and make available all visibility material;
  • Manage the thematic sessions that will be presented in the conference (Who will present them, where, how, what materials will they need, how many attendees will be, how they will rotate);
  • Manage the exhibition for the SEs (including rental of the stands, booths, and display of the products);
  • Support the SEs to organize their stands and arrange all logistics-related matters;
  • Write the conference proceeding report.

To carry out these responsibilities, the consultant is expected to:

  • Hold a planning session with Oxfam staff ASAP (date to be confirmed later)
  • Organise the event over a period of three  to four weeks (will be confirmed as per the discussion with the organiser)
  • Work closely with relevant Oxfam team members, including the Project managers, Senior Media and Communications officer, Policy advisor, Logistics, and Finance manager.
  • Hold frequent update planning and review meetings with Oxfam respective staff

4. EXPECTED DELIVERABLES

5. TIMEFRAME

The conferences are expected to be organized during April and May 2020. The exact date will be set after discussion with project team and the consultant. The workplan for the organizer will be discussed in due time.
