In consortium with Tearfund and ACCTS and with funding from EU-Madad, Medair provides psychosocial support and psychotherapy for Syrian refugees and vulnerable Lebanese people living in the Bekaa Valley. Medair also works with Syrian community health volunteers, who deliver important health messages to communities of Syrian refugees living in the Bekaa Valley.

 

SPECIFIC COMMUNICATIONS OBJECTIVES:

  1. Gather compelling photo resources from the EU-Madad-funded intervention in the Bekaa Valley for use by:
    1. EU-Madad consortium members in an EU-Madad-funded photo exhibition in Beirut in late 2018
    2. EU-Madad consortium members and EU-Madad in promotional materials, donor reports, online, and in the media
  2. If possible, use media connections to support promotion of the EU-Madad consortium’s intervention in the Bekaa Valley to European audiences.

 

COMMUNICATIONS OUTPUTS: Compelling photos of the EU-Madad-funded intervention in the Bekaa Valley.

  1. Photographs of staff funded through EU-Madad with:
    1. Supported families, both in clinic settings and in community settings
    2. EU-Madad-funded staff
    3. Partners and donors, or official bodies, where possible
  2. Photographs of families supported through the EU-Madad consortium intervention, with Medair communications staff providing additional written material (quotes, stories, background, etc) where necessary.
  3. Where possible, media contacts leading to press and media coverage of the EU-Madad-funded intervention in Lebanon and/or EU countries.

 

DETAILS:

Objective 1: Gather compelling photo resources from the EU-Madad funded intervention in the Bekaa Valley for EU-Madad funded photo exhibition in Beirut in late 2018.

The primary objective of this professional photography visit will be to create compelling photographs from the EU-Madad-funded intervention for use in a photo exhibit in Beirut in late 2018, as contractually agreed to by EU-Madad consortium members and EU-Madad.

Aim:

  • Minimum 35 high-quality photos of the EU-Madad intervention. This may include:
    • Photographs of EU-Madad-funded staff interacting with families supported through the intervention
    • Photographs of EU-Madad-funded staff interacting with each other
    • Photographs of families supported through the intervention
    • Where possible, photography of partners, donors, or official bodies

Photographs must reflect the values of the EU-Madad consortium members as much as possible. The photographer must follow Medair’s security protocols and should listen to the advice from Medair’s national and international staff about when it is and is not appropriate to take a photo for the purposes of dignity, safety, respect, and cultural understanding.  Please see attached for Medair’s photo ethics guidelines.

The Photographer will always be appropriately credited for their work when it is published (online, in print, in the media, and in the photo exhibit): ©Medair / Photographer Name.

Deadline: Within 14 days after the end of the visit.

 

Objective 2: If possible, use media connections to support promotion of the EU-Madad constortium intervention in the Bekaa Valley to Lebanese and European audiences.

If the Photographer has connections to EU-based or Lebanese media outlets, the Photographer may choose to work with EU-Madad consortium members (both field and HQ-based) to craft a news story or photo story for publication.

Deadline: Within three months after the end of the visit.

SECURITY

All reasonable steps will be taken to provide safety and security for the Photographer. Both Medair and the Photographer accept the inherent risks in working in humanitarian contexts. Medair will not be required to do more than what is reasonable and possible in the circumstances whilst providing a safe and appropriate work environment.

Medair will provide the Photographer with a security briefing on arrival in Lebanon. The briefing will cover the threats / risks of working in Lebanon (specifically in Bekaa) and on Medair’s Security Procedures, which the Photographer will be required to adhere to at all times.

 

PHOTOGRAPHER FEES AND TERMS OF PAYMENT

  • International flights and accommodation in transit, if required, will be arranged by Medair via pre-selected travel agents and will, therefore, be paid directly by Medair.
  • The consultancy fees payable to the Photographer will be calculated on the basis of an estimated three days of work and other costs, as stated in the quotation provided by the photographer.
  • Half of the consultancy fee will be paid into a bank account designated by the Photographer at the completion of the field work.
  • The remaining amount will be paid when the agreed outputs have been received and approved by Medair.
  • Any visa costs, cost of travel in country of abode, and meals while in transit (up to 3 meals per day, maximum 20 USD per meal, no alcohol, and no snacks/drinks between meals) will be reimbursed into the designated bank account against receipt.

 

PHOTOGRAPHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Obtain sufficient medical, repatriation, accident, liability and professional services insurance coverage. Proof of adequate coverage is to be submitted to Medair before the starting date of the contract.
  • Submit to Medair before the starting date of the contract proof of registration as Photographer. (Only if in Photographer’s country of residence such registration is normal practice.)
  • All travel arrangements to and from the airport of departure in country of abode (reasonable travel costs to and from the airport will be reimbursable by Medair; reasonable means public transport, second-class travel and taxis only if no other options or if late at night).
  • To arrange the required visas for travel to Lebanon, including visas of transiting countries if required (visa costs will be reimbursable by Medair).
  • Fulfil the above outputs as listed within the timeframe stated.
  • Obtain the necessary vaccinations before the start of the consultancy (not reimbursable by Medair).
  • Comply with Medair Lebanon Security Plan and recommendations on dress and behaviour, as given to expat staff.
  • Provide photography gear, laptop, software, or any other relevant equipment for professional use and report writing (not chargeable to or reimbursable by Medair).

 

MEDAIR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Arrangement of flights to and from Lebanon and booking of accommodation while the photographer is in transit if required.
  • Provide transport within Lebanon.
  • Arrange and cover the costs of in-country work permits and authorisations, if required
  • Provide food and accommodation in Lebanon.
  • Provide translators for photographer as needed.
  • Provide working facilities which will be as secure as is practical in the circumstances.
  • Reimburse reasonable expenses with valid receipts.
  • Medair is responsible for line management of all Medair employees and this shall not be transferred onto the Photographer. In some cases Medair may hire casual laborers, who can be managed by Photographer
