Mixed Feelings: Racism And 'othering' In Lebanon From A Lebanese Perspective

Join us for the opening of "Mixed Feelings: Racism and 'Othering' in Lebanon from a Lebanese Perspective", an exhibition using a combination of images and words to highlight the issue of racism in contemporary Lebanon.
The opening will feature an informal discussion with Wadih Al-Asmar, co-founder of the SOLIDA movement (Support of Lebanese Detained Arbitrarily), and CLDH (The Lebanese Center for Human Rights), starting 7 pm.
“Mixed Feelings” will be on exhibition from September 24 until October 1 (excluding Sunday September 28).
Bring your opinions, thoughts, words, arguments, experiences and insights, and let’s talk.
*This project is in cooperation with Heinrich Böll Foundation – Middle East Office.
// About the Project //
"Mixed Feelings" is a social and visual project that aims at unpacking and examining the issues of ‘race’, racialization and racism in Lebanon, and creating dialogue on these issues.
Lebanon is home to an estimated 250,000 migrant domestic workers (in an overall workforce of around 1.45 million). Due to a number of factors – such as socio-economic status; doing what is perceived as dirty work; being perceived as foreign / outsiders / ‘others’; and gender-related vulnerabilities – these individuals frequently face unchallenged racism and racialization in Lebanon. And because of these demographics, classism is usually tied to negative stereotyping when discussing these social groups and has become the sole excuse for “race” based discrimination.
To alter this discourse, “Mixed Feelings” attempts to clear a space for different voices on the subject. The exhibition comprises 33 photos of different Lebanese people of mixed-heritage, as well as 10 anonymous quotes in Arabic and 5 in English, taken from interviews with some of the project’s participants and reflecting their experience of what it is to be visibly ‘other’.
