3Ayune (My Eyes)

We are excited to introduce to you a selection of 184 images taken by 92 young photographers aged 12 to 16. 46 Syrian refugee kids and 46 Lebanese youth, working together, bring us these images as visual testimonies of their daily lives in Wadi Khaled.
Wadi Khaled region has been the first destination with 5,000 Syrian refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria in its earlier stages in April 2013. Today Wadi Khaled's population has doubled with around 30,000 Lebanese inhabitants and around 28,000 Syrian refugees. Youth is especially vulnerable in this region. Syrian refugees aged between 12 and 16 are not schooled thus they spend all day at home adding some more pressure in the daily cohabitation between hosting and refugee families.
In 3ayune's project, 92 young people aged between 12 and 16 (46 Lebanese from hosting families and 46 Syrian refugee girls and boys), have been trained on basic principles of digital photography during 96 hours of training taught by professional photographers. Apart from the technical training, this project allowed those young people to express their shared reality from both points of view: the hosting Lebanese families and the Syrian refugees. Moreover, these trainings contributed to reduce tensions by providing direct channels of interaction between both communities, bringing closer their children by daily interaction outside the household.
Each student kept one of the 15 semi-professional SLR digital cameras provided during the trainings during few days in order to put in practice the theoretical skills acquired during the courses. The result: they brought us the amazing testimonies exposed in this exhibit.
3ayune allowed the selected youth not only to break the routine they live in but to use a visual art and new technology trough digital photography to release tension and develop their creativity.
