National Forum “Contributing To Social Cohesion By Supporting Local Development, Results And Perspectives On A Project Conducted In 6 Lebanese Villages Affected By The Syrian Crisis”

To mark the closure of their project “Improving the socio-economic living conditions of the populations of six Lebanese villages”, funded by AFD, NGOs CCFD-Terre Solidaire, Mouvement Social, Mada and Fair Trade Lebanon organize a national forum entitled “Contributing to social cohesion by supporting local development, Results and perspectives on a project conducted in 6 Lebanese villages affected by the Syrian crisis” on Monday November 28th 2016 from 9:30 am to 1pm at French Institute in Beirut. The conference will be in Arabic and French.
For over five years, Lebanon has been facing a refugee inflow, which constitutes a political, economic and social challenge, and increase host communities’ vulnerability. The pressure on local authorities is particularly intense with the overexploitation of resources and saturation of public services. In this context, in late 2013, AFD launched a call for proposals to NGOs carrying out projects to improve the living conditions of refugee populations and host communities, and support local authorities.
Among those projects, the one implemented by CCFD-TS, MS, Mada and FTL contributes to improve the socio-economic living conditions of the populations of six Lebanese villages and mitigate the tensions over the presence of Syrian refugees through capacity building and the involvement of local stakeholders. The four NGOs have combined their skills, knowledge of the field and their expertise to assist rural communities. Together, they were able to support 6 municipalities and set up territorial joint committees; contribute to and create public services development (public transportation services in two villages in Akkar, waste collection system in Fourzol and renovation of municipal field in Aabra) and social services integrated within the municipalities (training of social workers in conflict resolution, inter-communal dialogue and the referencing of vulnerable persons); boost economic development through vocational training of 121 Lebanese and Syrian youth, including 71% girls, and support of five cooperatives of rural women in the concerned villages (knowledge exchange between Lebanese and Syrian women's on agro processing -food, cooperative management trainings of 89 women according to the principles of fair trade for, and marketing support); and encourage the exchange of experiences of participants and beneficiaries to improve and disseminate good practices in inclusive territorial development.
By the end of this two and a half years project, its main actors are willing to share results and perspectives of their action. By bringing together technical and financial actors, participants and municipalities involved in the project, but also actors from governmental institutions, civil society and academics the national forum will be an opportunity to elaborate together perspectives for inclusive development and social resilience at local authority level in Lebanon.
