Syrian Refugees’ Livelihoods In Lebanon: Constraining Legislations And Increased Informality.

Lebanon Support cordially invites you to a roundtable on:
Syrian Refugees’ Livelihoods in Lebanon: Constraining Legislations and Increased Informality.
Presentation of primary fieldwork findings by Lebanon Support
Although the Lebanese economy has a long history of relying on the presence of foreign - and especially Syrian - labour, the influx of refugees as of 2011 has had its impact on the Lebanese labour market. As a reaction to the deteriorating labour conditions both Lebanese nationals and Syrian refugees are facing, the Lebanese government has adopted a set of new restrictions and policies in October 2014 to limit and control Syrian presence in the country, as well as to protect Lebanese employment. However, research findings show that  these policies have contributed to an increase of informality, illegality, and exploitation dynamics affecting mainly Syrian refugees working in Lebanon. This research project is in partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.
Our endeavour in this roundtable is to examine the history and current situation of Syrians working in Lebanon, through the analysis of policies posed by the Lebanese government. We also seek to critically reflect on dynamics of formal policies,  informality, and exploitation. In this vein, the roundtable will focus especially on the impact of these policies on Syrians’ working conditions and livelihoods.
With discussants:
Fadi Halliso, Basmeh & Zeitooneh
George Ghali, Alef
