Masculinity-under-threat: the de- and re- politicization of women’s and sexual rights organizations in Lebanon in the wake of the War on Terror
Anthony Rizk
has been involved in sexuality and gender activism since 2009 and served on the Board of Directors of Helem in 2010-2011. He works as a research assistant in medical anthropology and social epidemiology at the Faculty of Health Sciences, American University of Beirut.
 
Ghassan Makarem
is a civil society and political activist, who had been engaged in LGBT activism in Lebanon and the region since 2001. He is a co-signatory of Helem's establishment charter and as Executive Director from 2010 to 2011 and on the Board of Directors of the organization for several terms between 2004 and 2011.

Rodolph Gebrael
holds a master degree holder in international humanitarian and solidarity job,  and a master in international law and international relations  from Lyon University – France . He has worked with several international organisation mainly in planning , monitoring and evaluation , and currently holds the position of country manager in Lebanon  for Diakonia Sweden. He is also a university instructor at La Sagesse  faculty of political sciences , NGO  management Unit  and a voting member of the Biomedical Institutional Review Board (IRB).
 
Recently, a serious turning began to take shape in Lebanon. It followed several years of quiet elimination of public spaces for gay cruising and non-conformity, in general, in favor of violent and rampant gentrification, including the creation of imaginary queer spaces. This was crystallized perhaps in the highly mediatized arrest and humiliation of transgender individuals in Dekweneh in 2013, and subsequent reaction of LGBT groups, leading to another show of force by the police in Beirut in the raid on Agha Hammam in 2014, and the disclosure of the inner discourse of the regime through the extensive statements by victims of state brutality. This public engagement with sexual politics by sectarian and nationalist political actors constitutes a development in sexuality politics in advancing the argument of masculinity-under-threat, mirroring the reaction to Lebanese women organizations' demands around the right to pass their nationality and gender based violence. The roundtable will discuss the concept of ‘masculinity-under-threat’ as a central crisis of the present nation-state, tackling a shift in masculinity, which stems from the influence of global politics around the War on Terror and the Arab revolutions and the reaction of formal LGBT, queer, and feminist civil society organizations.

الرجولة المهددة: عملية لا تسييس وإعادة تسييس منظمات المرأة والحقوق الجنسية في لبنان في أعقاب الحرب على الإرهاب

ينشط منذ العام ٢٠٠٩ حول قضايا الجنسانية والجندر، وانضم إلى مجلس إدارة جمعية حلم في العامين ٢٠١٠ و٢٠١١، وهو يعمل حالياً كمساعد باحث في الأنثروبولوجيا الطبية وعلم الأوبئة الاجتماعي في كلية العلوم الصحية في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت.
 
غسان مكارم
مناضل سياسي وناشط في المجتمع المدني، ينخرط منذ العام ٢٠٠١ في النضال لحقوق المثليين والمثليات والثنائيين والثنائيات والمغايرين والمغايرات جنسياً في لبنان والمنطقة، وقد شارك في توقيع ميثاق تأسيس جمعية حلم وشغل منصب مديرها التنفيذي بين ٢٠١٠ و٢٠١١ وفي هيئتها الإدارية لعدة فترات بين ٢٠٠٤ و٢٠١١.

حاصل على درجة الماجستير في التضامن الدولي والعمل الإنساني وماجستير في القانون الدولي والعلاقات الدولية من جامعة ليون في فرنسا، وقد عمل في عدّة منظمات دولية، خاصة في مجال التخطيط والرصد، وهو يشغل حالياً منصب مدير مكتب لبنان في جمعية دياكونيا السويدية، كما يعمل أيضاً كمحاضر في جامعة الروح القدس، كلية العلوم السياسية، وحدة إدارة المنظمات غير الحكومية، وله حق التصويت كعضو في مجلس المراجعة المؤسسي للطب الحيوي.
 
في الآونة الأخيرة، شهد لبنان تحوّلاً جدّياً أتى بعد عدة سنوات من التدمير الصامت للمساحات العامة التي يستخدمها مثليو الجنس للتلاقي وإظهار الاختلاف، لصالح سياق مستشر وعنيف من التبديل في النسيج المُدني، بما في ذلك المساحات الكويرية الوهمية. وقد تبلور هذا التحوّل، ربما، في عملية اعتقال وإذلال عدد من الأفراد المتحولين جنسيا في الدكوانة في عام ٢٠١٣، مع ما رافقها من الإثارة الإعلامية وردة الفعل اللاحقة لجماعات المثليين والمثليات، وصولاً إلى عرض العضلات الأخير من جانب الشرطة في بيروت في اقتحامها لحمام الآغا في العام ٢٠١٤، والذي كشف عن مكنونات خطاب النظام من خلال الشهادات التفصيلية لضحايا بطش الدولة. ويشكّل هذا الانهماك في الإدارة الجنسية من قبل الجهات السياسية الطائفية والوطنية تطوراً في دفع حجّة "الرجولة المهددة" في السياسات الجنسانية، الصورة التي تتطابق مع ردّة الفعل حول مطالب المنظمات النسائية اللبنانية في حق تمرير الجنسية والحماية من العنف المبني على الجندر. ستقوم الطاولة المستديرة بمناقشة مفهوم "الرجولة المُهددة" كأزمة محورية في الدولة القومية حالياً، وستعالج التحول في الرجولة الذي ينبع من تأثير السياسات الدولية في إطار الحرب على الإرهاب وسياق الثورات العربية، بالإضافة إلى تفاعل المجموعات الرسمية للمثليين والمثليات والثنائيين والثنائيات والمغايرين والمغايرات جنسياً والكويريين ومنظمات المجتمع المدني النسوية مع الموضوع.
