Workshop: New reflections on exile and migration

Are you a journalist, someone with experience in media and writing, or someone working with refugees and migration? This workshop, held in Beirut on 16-17 March, will give you an opportunity to reflect on your own perspectives, develop better understandings of migration in Lebanon, and find ways to do better reporting on the topic.

The workshop is open to anyone with a journalistic experience, including writers, documentarians, photographers, bloggers, students and others, and anyone working with refugees and migration, in particular those in communication or documentation who come in close contact with journalists. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds.

During two full days, using participatory and reflective methods, we will look at ourselves as journalistic actors: how our own experiences have shaped us and our perspectives, how the way we report has an impact on others, and how we can do journalism in a way that defies stereotypes and promotes justice and equality.

The workshop will:

– give participants an introduction to migration in the Lebanese context

– promote critical ways of thinking about journalism in general and migration reporting in particular

– encourage an intercultural and self-reflective approach where journalists reflect on their own roles

– connect different actors in journalism and work collectively for a more just and equitable coverage

The organisers of the workshop are Jibal, a Lebanese non-profit promoting sustainability and social justice, and Mashallah News, a regional media collective publishing stories on society and urban culture. Angela Saade, co-founder of Jibal and a long-established trainer on youth and anti-discrimination projects, and Jenny Gustafsson, co-founder of Mashallah News and editor/journalist with a long experience of reporting on migration, will lead the workshop. The session on migration in the Lebanese context will be held by Fawwaz Traboulsi, historian, political scientist and accomplished author/journalist who has published widely on politics, culture and social movements.

Time: Friday 16 March and Saturday 17 March, 9.00–17.30, with breaks for lunch and coffee.

Place: TBD, Hotel seminar room in Beirut. There is a possibility to sleep in the hotel if needed.

Language: English and Arabic, with simultaneous translation

إن ورشة العمل هذه مفتوحة لأي شخص لديه خبرة صحفية بما في ذلك الكتّاب ومصورّي الأفلام الوثائقية والمصوّرين والطلاب وغيرهم من المهتمين الذين يتناولون شؤون اللاجئين والمهجرين والهجرة، خاصةً الأشخاص الذين يتعاونون عن كثب مع الصحفيين. نشجع الجميع على اختلاف خلفياتهم على تقديم طلبات الاشتراك في ورشة العمل.

تمتدّ ورشة العمل على يومين كاملين سنقوم بخلالها بالتمعن بدورنا كجهات صحفية فاعلة من خلال تشارك الأفكار والتجارب ومناقشتها بعمقٍ مع التركيز على الأسئلة التالية: كيف تغيّر التجارب المرء وتغيّر نظرته إلى الأمور؟ كيف تؤثر طريقة نقلنا وتغطيتنا للخبر على الآخرين؟ كيف نؤدي عملنا الصحفي بشكلٍ يتحدّى الصور النمطية ويعزّز العدالة والمساواة؟

في خلال ورشة العمل سيتمّ::

تعريف المشاركين على الهجرة في السياق اللبناني

تعزيز طرق التفكير الإيجابية بشأن الصحافة بشكلٍ عامٍ ونقل وتغطية أخبار الهجرة والمهجرين بشكلٍ خاص

التشجيع على اتباع نهج مشترك بين الثقافات والنقد الذاتي حيث يمكن للصحافيين التمعن في دورهم في هذا الخصوص

تعريف الجهات الفاعلة في مجال الصحافة على بعضها البعض والعمل بشكلٍ جماعي من أجل تغطية إعلامية ونقل للخبر بشكلٍ أكثر عدالة وإنصافًا

منظمة جبال اللبنانية وهي منظمة لا تبغي الربح وتسعى إلى تعزيز العدالة الاجتماعية، بالإضافة إلى موقع مشالله نيوز، وهو مبادرة إعلامية جماعية تنشر قصصًا اجتماعية وثقافية وحضرية من المنطقة.

تترأس ورشة العمل كلّ من أنجيلا سعادة وهي مؤسسة مشاركة في منظمة جبال ومدربة مخضرمة في مجال مشاريع الشباب ومكافحة التمييز، وجيني غوستافسون وهي مؤسسة مشاركة في مشالله نيوز ومحرّرة وصحافية تملك خبرة طويلة في تغطية أخبار وشؤون الهجرة والمهاجرين.

سيدير النقاش حول موضوع الهجرة في السياق اللبناني المؤرخ فواز طرابلسي وهو أيضًا متخصص في العلوم السياسية لديه مجموعة واسعة من الكتب المنشورة حول السياسة والحركات الاجتماعية والثقافية.

الوقت: الجمعة والسبت في 16 و17 آذار/مارس من الساعة التاسعة صباحًا حتى الخامسة والنصف، يتخلّل ذلك استراحات للغداء والقهوة.
